The city is of great importance to Christians as the birthplace of Jesus (Isa). Bethlehem contains several churches, perhaps the most important of which is the Church of the Nativity, built by Constantine the Great (330 AD). The church was built over a cave or grotto believed to be the manger where Jesus was born. This church is believed to be the oldest existing church in the world. There is also another crypt nearby where Jerome is believed to have spent thirty years of his life translating the BibleBethlehem has a mild Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers and cold, rainy winters.

Bethlehem It is said that this name is derived from the phrase "Beit Lahama" (or Beit Lakhama), a Canaanite phrase meaning the house of the goddess "Lahama" (or Lakhama), the goddess of sustenance and food for the ancient Canaanites.
